Four Wheels or Four Legs - Tafel Family Racing
Friday, 04 May 2007

ALMSCumming, Georgia– James Tafel and Jim Tafel share an urge for competition, but take very different mounts to get to the finish line.

James Tafel, father, is a renowned thoroughbred horse breeder with a goal to win the Kentucky Derby.  Jim Tafel, son, is a budding race car driver and team owner with a dream to one-day win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

James owns three-year-old colt Street Sense who is currently one of three favorites at 8 to 1 going into the Kentucky Derby.  On Nov. 4, 2006, Street Sense won the most important race for 2-year-old colts in the United States, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, at Churchill Downs.  That day he was a 15-to-1 long shot ridden by Calvin Borel.  He powered away approaching the stretch and earned a record-setting ten-length win in the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile.  Street Sense went on to win the Tampa Derby last month and will compete this weekend in the Toyota Blue Grass at Keeneland, his final prep race before the derby.

“My son and I have taken different roads to express our competitive personalities,” James Tafel said.  “Horse racing is sport that has always intrigued me, the grace, speed and ability of the these animals is very much like a high-performance sportscar.  Instead of oil and gas, it is oats and hay.”

Tafel Racing Race Report VIR 400
Wednesday, 02 May 2007

ALTON, Va.—Tafel Racing had some great moments and some less than great moments at the VIR 400  on Saturday in round four of the Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve.

The day got off to an exciting start when German Wolf Henzler took the 74 Rembrandt Charms Porsche GT3 Cup from 25th position to qualify on the pole in the final laps of the fifteen-minute session.

“When I went out, I had a problem with the fuel, so I came in immediately to the pits, said Henzler. “The crew found the problem, but when I went back out the session was black flagged and when it s green again, I was told there were two minutes left in the session. There were maybe 15 cars in front of me, so I did what I could do and tried to get a clear lap in traffic. The crew worked very hard and very quick to make changes after practice and the car was ready just in time for qualifying.  I want to thank the crew who gave me a perfect car for qualifying.”

Teammate Andrew Davis of Bogart, Ga. also had a successful qualifying, finishing 3rd, the car’s best starting position of the season.

Tafel Racing Goes to Virginia International Raceway
Thursday, 26 April 2007

Photo Credit: Rick Dole CUMMING, Ga-- After a month of steady work at their north Georgia workshop, the Tafel Racing team is anxious to go racing again in round four of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve at the beautiful Virginia International Raceway, in Alton, Va.

German Wolf Henzler, who will drive the # 74 Rembrandt Charms Porsche GT3 Cup, has good memories of VIR from the 2006 season.

“I qualified on the pole in the rain last year at VIR, so it is a track I really like. The many chicanes make it challenging to find the right setup, but I feel confident. We ran well there last year and I am hoping to find our first podium finish of the season.”
